VHE observations of unidentified EGRET sources
نویسنده
چکیده
Observations of unidentified EGRET sources were made with the Whipple 10m imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescope between Fall 1999 and Spring 2001. During this period, a high resolution 490 pixel camera with 4 field of view was present on the telescope. Characterization of the off-axis response of this instrument was done using observations of the Crab Nebula. No significant emission was detected from the eight unidentified EGRET sources observed and upper limits are presented as a function of position.

Demystifying an unidentified EGRET source by VHE gamma-ray observations
In a novel approach in observational highenergy gamma-ray astronomy, observations carried out by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes provide necessary templates to pinpoint the nature of intriguing, yet unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources. Using GeV-photons detected by CGRO EGRET and taking advantage of high spatial resolution images from H.E.S.S. observations, we were able to shed new li...
متن کاملUnresolved Unidentified Source Contribution to the Gamma-ray Background
The large majority of EGRET point sources remain without an identified low-energy counterpart, and a large fraction of these sources are most likely extragalactic. Whatever the nature of the extragalactic EGRET unidentified sources, faint unresolved objects of the same class must have a contribution to the diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB). Understanding this component of the EG...
متن کاملDiscovery of a point-like very-high-energy γ-ray source in Monoceros
Aims. The complex Monoceros Loop SNR/Rosette Nebula region contains several potential sources of very-high-energy (VHE) γray emission and two as yet unidentified high-energy EGRET sources. Sensitive VHE observations are required to probe acceleration processes in this region. Methods. The H.E.S.S. telescope array has been used to search for very high-energy γ-ray sources in this region. CO data...
متن کاملSurveying the Tev Sky with Milagro
A wide field of view, high duty factor TeV gamma-ray observatory is essential for studying TeV astrophysical sources, because most of these sources are either highly variable or are extended. Milagro is such a TeV detector and has performed the deepest survey of the Northern Hemisphere sky at TeV energies. In addition to detecting the Crab Nebula and Mrk 421, which are known TeV sources, Milagr...
متن کاملObservation of selected SNRs with the MAGIC Cherenkov Telescope
Supernova Remnants (SNRs) are believed to be the acceleration sites of galactic cosmic rays. As such they are expected to produce Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-rays through hadronic and/or electromagnetic scenarios, hence they are natural targets for observations with ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). Currently, VHE emission has been detected from several SNRs, makin...
